Image
Week 7 Day 1 of Work Experience at LIT Paintbrushes out this weekend: Autumn Leaves. Moodle Videos: Working on feedback about Moodle videos today. Article: Article read today about a webinar for GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation).  Source: Facebook. This is a summary of the webinar objectives for companies to prepare for this major reform, that is now a year away. This is for preparation and understanding of "the scope of the changes in these impending regulations." With regard to IT one of the speakers is Ted Julian, cyber security expert. This next are some interesting key relevant points: There is a form with this for its "download" to your computer. Moodle Videos continued: When recording audio separate from screen-captures, I have found the following:  There are two main ways to record audio: directly by the "narration" path, and then as a combination with "screen-captures." I have found that the later is bet...

Week 6 Day 5 of Work Experience at LIT Working from home today. Working on Newsletter_2 deliverable due this end of month. Received email from Stephen on updates to be completed on batch of e-learning tutorial videos I sent to him this week. Will completed these on Monday when in college. Article read today: "Why skills don't trump having Degrees." Article main points: This article is based on one from last month published in the New York Times about the emergence of skills-based hiring throughout the country. The main finding was that middle-skill jobs in the technology sector are in high-demand and that there are not enough qualified individuals to fill those openings. Companies like IBM are incorporating into their hiring strategy those without college degrees while many other companies for high-paying jobs, these are reserved for degree graduates. In terms of this representation in the technology sector, in education trends, there has been an upsurge of ...

Week 6 Day 4 of Work Experience at LIT Started at 11:30 am, checked email, and plans for the day. Read up on Power BI yesterday evening in preparation for today's training. Watched this u-tube video: Microsoft Power BI. Key points noted from above video and online literature: Produce dashboards and reports on your desktop, tablet, power to mobile. Up to date data analytics. Use of keywords rather than complicated equations for calculated/presented data display. A definition: is a suite of business tools that deliver insights through organisation. Can connect to hundreds of data sources. Simplified data preparation. Live ad hoc analysis. Production and publication of reports for an organisation that can be consumed on the web and across mobile devices. Personalized dashboards. Built in security. Practical example: connect to the data in an Excel workbook to create Power BI reports and dashboards from it. Brings details to life. Transforms data into decision...

Week 6 Day 3  of Work Experience at LIT Image I photographed from yesterday evenings walk as inspiration for today's work: Started work at 9:00 am, checked email and plans for the day. Will continue editing and streamlining videos as per yesterdays work for this morning. The following videos have been edited and updated with new techniques and for consistency of e.g. colour scheme, layout, typography, in these e-learning tutorial videos: M.S. OneDrive. Moodle Manual-enrolment. Moodle Self-enrolment. Moodle Embed Media Moodle Adding Content. Moodle Assignment Creation. Moodle Submission of Assignment Administration. Stephen provided training on "large file uploads" for that e-learning video tutorial. Training for tomorrow is the topic of Power BI, which is a program for manipulating metrics and statistics. Article read today called: Interesting graphic in the article describing the software"RescueTime", used to track activities b...

Week 6: Day 2 of Work Experience at LIT

Week 6 Day 2 of Work Experience at LIT Nice sky photo I took recently to start the day:   On a half day today and started work at 1: 30 pm, checked email and reviewed plans for the day. Updated previous videos with new techniques learned and to remove unwanted effects, such as flicker. Streamlined details in the video designs so that they are all recognizable as a unit with similar template, colour scheme, typography and effects used. For this batch today, I have completed the above tasks for videos on: Creating an assignment in Moodle Setting up of submission of assignment in Moodle Adding content to Moodle page How to embed media in a Moodle page I will continue with this tomorrow. Excellent newsletter for reading about current trends in eWebDesign: There were several articles in this newsletter of which one was particularly interesting about, consistency in web design by Jake Rocheleau: In this article is discussed, consistency for guiding user b...

Week 6 Day 1 of Work Experience at LIT Black ink on tracing paper (photocopy to white paper) of sketch I did yesterday of  LIT Millennium Theater Gardens. Started at 9:00 am, checked email, and made plans for the day. I will continue with Friday's e-learning video tutorial on how to set up the student upload submission of assignments to the lecturers course page. Completed the above referred to video. I added an extra feature of defining boxes to clarify areas of the page where all the headings and their content are similar looking. For this I used the hex code for LIT as #ED3E31, which I obtained using the color-picker. Next e-learning tutorial video is on "large file uploads." Working on the July Newsletter due this week. Here, I will include the e-learning videos made this month, work hierarchy structure and other notes. Working on the Kiosk website: To be added here among other items and designs, are the requirements of the Logo in the header and ...

Week 5: Day 4 of Work Experience at LIT

Image
Week 5 Day 5 of Work Experience at LIT Started work at 9:00 am, checked email, discussed recent work and work for the day, email from Stephen about next "video on large file uploads." Have been writing out the script for "setting up a student submission assignment process." Set up microphone and Camtasia screen-capture to record. Most of recordings are complete. Stephen sent emails detailing website requirements for student kiosk helpdesk to be set up by September. Michael sent emails about using Photoshop and details of Eduroam project requirements. Nice friendship image for the weekend ahead:

Week 5: Day 3 of Work Experience at LIT

Image
Week 5 Day 3 of Work Experience at LIT Started at 9:00 am, checked email, reviewed yesterdays work and plan for today. Will make another 2 videos on the Moodle topics of: How to create an assignment by lecturer for students? (completed today and shared.) How to create submission set-up, for students to upload assignments to lecturer?  Revise latest videos and update from feedback. We met with Stephen. I showed him my work and we talked about suggestions for interactivity for user when it is at the u-tube development stage, that at the title page, they can on-click select the part of the video of relevance to them. Stephen is looking into an intermediary flicker screen between some clips, where a black screen with the cursor live appears within some clips. I found out a few useful Camtasia techniques today, namely: to add zoom features when timeline is at maximum; stretching the zoom arrow for smoother transitions of clips. A thoughtful "Adobe" image for the ...

Week 5: Day 2 of Work Experience at LIT

Week 5 Day 2 of Work Experience at LIT Started at 9:00 am, checked email, reviewed yesterdays work and made plan for the day. Completed another video today on "How to add media to your Moodle course page." I find that it is a fast process in recording the video: audio and screen-captures. What takes the time are setting of the zooms and from this trying to avoid flicker between clips/zooms. I would say that if the zoom's and flicker were fixed, I would be producing more than 2 videos per day. Other ways of handling these features, I must ask about. Watched some Lynda.com Camtasia videos as far as Chapter 3, part 2. This is about how to sync a mobile phone with a computer that all link to Camtasia; three factors here to look at. This is shown in the "Capturing Multiple Sources" section. The author uses "Gamesscreen Recorder App," and recommends the following checklist for selecting an app: Screen touches Hides the record button Is compatible w...

Have scripts drawn up for: "Adding course content to Moodle page" "Moodle course page administration" I worked on making the video on "Adding Content to your Moodle page" for staff. Audio, screen-capture and overall video completed. Got feedback from Stephen on the previous video, will work on that tomorrow morning. The following is a screen of a Search Engine Watch article I read today: Here's another Search Engine Watch Article on combining UX and SEO for increased productivity: The conclusion to this above article sums up the main points very well:

Week 4: Day 4 of Work Experience at LIT

Image
Week 4 Day 4 of Work Experience at LIT Started at 9:00 am, checked email, and made plans for the day. Completed video on "Moodle Self-Enrolment" and shared through OneDrive to Stephen and Alan. Script completed for next Moodle video. This is for staff, on adding course content to their Moodle pages. Moodle is temporarily unavailable. Hence, made a start on the Adobe Photoshop work. While on Lynda.com I printed my Axure RP for UX Design Completion Certificate: Lynda.com: Creating a Poster with Adobe Mobile Apps by Tony Harmer: Introduction: Chapter 1: Shape CC Part 1: How to use Shape CC Part 2: Capturing the bulk shape Part 3: Capturing the highlights Part 4: Capturing the defining shape Chapter 2: Color CC Part 1: How to use Color CC Part 2: Capturing the Poster Colors Part 3: Creating your own harmony Completed.

Week 4: Day 2 of Work Experience at LIT

Image
Week 4 Day 2 of Work Experience at LIT Started 9:00 am, checked email, reviewed yesterdays work and plan for today. Completed audio and screen-capture recordings. Completed edits of these. Added transitions and effects to video. Added blurs. Next is to add zooms. From the "self-enrolment video" of last week. On reflection, I also increased the clip-speed of the log in step at the start of the video. Then, converted into MP4. I read some articles related to IT and design. One of interest is from "Search Engine Watch," on "how RankBrain Does (and Doesn't) Impact SEO." The main points about RankBrain are that it: Interprets the user query Determines search intent Selects results (items) from the databases It is based on principles and processes of: machine learning association rule learning Its purpose is to help Google provide more accurate results and an overall better search experience for users, satisfying their queries. ...

Image
Week 4 Day 1 of Work Experience at LIT Started at 9:00 am, checked email, reviewed work from last week and work for today. Wrote up the script for e-learning video tutorial for staff, on how to use the "self-enrolment" method to set up enrolment procedures for students onto their course. Typing up the script and then recording. Script typed up and printed. Read an article on LinkedIn on e-learning which is relevant to this Work Placement: Main points are: Learning Management Systems (LMS) and Instructional design have two key success factors: quality of content and manner of delivery. After that the significant features are: Attention to design of learning product Being a facilitator (rather than an expert relaying the facts) Discuss results and use engagement techniques Keep up momentum for entire duration  Offer possibilities to seek help Link to article is: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/live-learning-ice-breaker-engaging-e-learners-dr...

Week 3: Day 5 of Work Experience at LIT

Week 3 Day 5 of Work Experience at LIT Started work at 9:00 am, checked email, reviewed work for the day. Sent video on "Manual Enrolment" to Stephen. Improved the resolution of the "OneDrive" video, and also shared this through OneDrive. Key point moving forwards is while system noise can be removed directly from the clips, the use of headphones while recording video, eliminates any other background noise and produces a clearer effect. Today being a Friday, is for working with Adobe. Plan for the day is to watch the tutorials on and learn about Adobe Dreamweaver. This I will be using in creating the website for the e-learning videos. Watched Adobe Dreamweaver tutorials on Lynda.com. Chapter 1, parts 1->8.

Week 3: Day 4 of Work Experience at LIT

Week 3 Day 4 of Work Experience at LIT Started work at 9:00 am, reviewed plans for the day. I worked on editing of the IT tutorial video I'm working on. Found another trick with the "zoom-and-pan" function. Highlight screen-captures and all other effects such as blurs, and apply the zoom to them all at once. In that way, the effects are maintained and do not need to be adjusted when adding zoom functionality to the video. This is both a useful technical and a time saving feature. Stephen reviewed the video, I have it almost completed now. Next, is to increase the level and opacity of the blur (for covering confidential information on pages being recorded) for the zoomed areas. Add the LIT intro to the start of the video and to add a zoom-out at the very end of tutorial. I updated Adobe products yesterday, on my home computer, having been getting pop-up notifications this week of "11 Adobe apps to update," took over an hour, nevertheless its the finish...

Week 3: Day 3 of Work Experience at LIT

Image
Week 3 Day 3 of Work Experience at LIT Started at 9:00 am, checked email, reviewed yesterdays work and plans for today. David and I worked on writing up scripts and then divided the work. My next task is to work on e-learning videos for staff for "Self-enrollment" and another video on "Manual enrollment." I went through the script and refined it to match up with the plan for screen captures and audio. Before recording, we discussed the rest of our plan for the day and got started. Recording on Camtasia: I set up title slides to introduce the video with a recommendation of using "self-enrollment" method above "manual-enrollment", the former being more efficient. I used the same colour scheme as per OneDrive video as template. The red fill solid colour as #7C15103, and the border as light green #05AF8E. Completed draft of screen-captures and audio for "manual-enrolement" e-learning video. Signed up for: ewebdesign.com newsl...

Week 3: Day 2 of Work Placement at LIT

Image
Week 3:  Day 2 of Work Placement at LIT Started at 9:00 am, checked email, reviewed yesterdays work and started on the plan for today. Following yesterdays Moodle training, we decided to first set out the headings of each video to be made and continue these then with descriptions, before going into further detail. After this is organised, the next steps are drawing up the scripts. I read an article on "LinkedIn B2B Marketing." The following image is a screen-shot of part of an infographic that displays the actions and effectiveness of these LinkedIn Marketing Solutions. I read from LinkedIn an article by Shannon, from our class in her employment on "The Secrets behind a Start-Up Company." Very interesting read. I did some research on Adaptive/Responsive Design. Mainly working on writing up of video categories for Moodle. Document is as follows: page 1 Moodle Tutorials Headings: General: How to log in: accessing Moodle from both points of...
