Week 6
Day 5 of Work Experience at LIT
Working from home today. Working on Newsletter_2 deliverable due this end of month.
Received email from Stephen on updates to be completed on batch of e-learning tutorial videos I sent to him this week. Will completed these on Monday when in college.
Article read today: "Why skills don't trump having Degrees."
Article main points:
This article is based on one from last month published in the New York Times about the emergence of skills-based hiring throughout the country. The main finding was that middle-skill jobs in the technology sector are in high-demand and that there are not enough qualified individuals to fill those openings. Companies like IBM are incorporating into their hiring strategy those without college degrees while many other companies for high-paying jobs, these are reserved for degree graduates.
In terms of this representation in the technology sector, in education trends, there has been an upsurge of coding bootcamps that have an objective of replacing or as an alternative to the traditional four-year computer science curriculum. However, degrees remain currently as the gold standard for employability.
There is another trend where graduates are doing these bootcamp style courses, both to further or brush up on their IT knowledge, as part-time and as interest courses.
In conclusion, the author of this article says while Degrees are the desirable option for many employers, that "skills pay the bills," hence, a message here to have both for best employability.
Newsletter deliverable for this month: completed and uploaded Newsletter_2_July 2017.
